The Mangalarga Marchador horse emerged in the 19th century, in the south of Minas Gerais, from the crossing of Iberian horses with other horses from the region. The breed is known for its beauty, resistance and docility.
Origins:
The first Alter horses arrived in Brazil in 1808, brought by King John VI.The basis of the Alter breed is the Spanish Andalusian breed, which in turn descends from native horses from the Iberian Peninsula, Germanic and Berber. The first specimens of the Mangalarga breed were bred on the farm of the Baron of Alfenas, Gabriel Francisco Junqueira.
Development:
Brazilian breeders sought to create an animal that combined beauty, resistance and a smooth, comfortable gait.
The new animals were selected by the baron’s nephew, who practiced deer hunting.
Importance:
The Mangalarga Marchador is a breed appreciated by breeders and horse lovers throughout Brazil and also in other countries.
The Brazilian Association of Mangalarga Marchador Horse Breeders (ABCCMM) is a non-profit civil entity that officially registers the genealogy of animals of the breed.
